Position Description: Empirico, an early-stage biotechnology company, is looking for an assistant scientist with a strong background in performing biomarker assays. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced scientist that desires to make meaningful contributions in the discovery and validation of new therapeutic targets. You will work closely with other scientists that have a passion for finding novel approaches toward the treatment and prevention of disease.

Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include establishing and performing a wide variety of biochemical and molecular biological assays designed to provide insights into gene function in in vitro and cell culture models. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in both protein-based and nucleic acid-based assay systems, be highly organized, and enjoys working in a team environment. You will be expected to:

• Perform a wide variety of biomarker assays
• Aid in the creation of experimental protocols and SOPs
• Maintain detailed experimental records
• Analyze and communicate experimental results
• Perform general laboratory duties including the ordering of reagents/supplies
• Be a team player who enjoys an open environment where you can contribute in highly meaningful and impactful ways

Requirements:

• B.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field with 2+ years of experience in a laboratory setting
• Hands on experience of assay systems including ELISA, AlphaLISA, RT-qPCR, reporter gene systems, Luminex
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint
• Experience in cell culture techniques is a plus
• Previous industry experience is preferred

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly-motivated, creative scientist to be a vital member of a team of experts dedicated to identifying new disease targets and translating those insights into therapeutic programs.

Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include using human genetics data to identify new therapeutic targets in order to advance Empirico’s drug discovery and development pipeline. You will be expected to:

• Work with a multidisciplinary team consisting of human geneticists, bioinformaticians and software engineers to lead the design, execution, and interpretation of in silico human genetic studies
• Discover novel genetic associations with human diseases using Empirico’s world-leading target discovery platform
• Provide genetic intelligence on therapeutic targets of interest for external collaborators
• Create and deliver expert-level presentations that clearly communicate genetic discoveries and stories to colleagues, collaborators and investors
• Translate findings from genetic studies into therapeutic hypotheses and contribute to decisions around therapeutic modality and targeting strategies
• Collaborate with biologists and chemists on the design of in vitro and in vivo experiments to validate therapeutic hypotheses that are motivated by human genetics findings
• Provide novel ideas and critical thinking for the continued development and improvement of Empirico’s target discovery platform
• Survey the latest developments in the broader genetics community and incorporate relevant approaches and findings into internal studies

Requirements:

• This position requires an MD or PhD with 0-3 years of postgraduate experience in human genetics research with a translational focus. Recent graduates and postdocs encouraged to apply.
• Core background MUST be in computational genetics; this position is NOT for scientists with a primarily wet-lab background
• A firm understanding of the principles of statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology
• Demonstrated ability to design, lead and interpret human genetics studies and to discern therapeutic hypotheses
• Familiarity with the design of functional studies to understand the mechanistic basis for genetic associations
• Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.
